Glorious?

I watched some of the TV “highlights” yesterday and I really, really don’t get the Twelfth. Burning things, marching about, listening to largely repetitive drum music, drinking in the street in a Union Jack jester’s hat – if I felt the need to celebrate my culture as a man who is proud to be an Ulsterman and a Christian, none of these things would feature.

That said, it is obviously of huge importance to some people and I think I need to be really careful of just dismissing the whole things because I consider myself to be “better” or “more englightened”. For some people, it is a huge part of expressing their British/Protestant culture as they understand it. A teenage boy in Portavogie said the 11th night and 12th were his favourite days of the year – better than his birthday or Christmas!

PS I might not get the Twelfth, but I am grateful for a couple of days off.
